Cremation

Does my religion allow cremation?

All Christian denominations, including Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland, allow cremation. Orthodox Judaism, and Islam forbid cremation.

Is is usual to hold a service in the case of cremation?

Yes, usually in the deceased’s local parish church or other venue. The coffin is then removed to the chapel at the crematorium, for a short committal service, ending with the coffin being moved out of view, into a holding room, and then to the crematorium for actual cremation.

Is the coffin cremated with the body?

Yes and this is regulated by law.

How can I be sure the ashes I receive are those of my loved one?

Coffins are not accepted at a crematorium without full details of the identity of the deceased person. Strict protocol is adhered to at the crematorium, from receipt, through cremation, and final placement in the urn.
